Objective: The present study aims to assess the requirements for enhancing the armor protection of legacy armored vehicles through the application of emerging technologies and to investigate the role of these technologies in improving their survivability, mobility, and combat effectiveness.
Methodology: For this purpose, 78 senior officers of the AJA Armored Division who were active in the command and management ranks of the armored forces were selected as the statistical population. The stratified random sampling method and the applied descriptive research type were mixed analysis approaches.
Findings:The results of the data analysis based on the responses of 30 experts and specialists in the armored field indicated that the use of advanced protection technologies, including reactive armor, active protection systems, and other technologies related to protection and survivability, was significantly associated, from the respondents’ perspective, with enhanced survivability and protection of legacy armored vehicles.
Originality: Upgrading classic armor, if using modern technologies such as reactive armor, active defense systems, and network-based combat systems, can significantly increase survivability, reduce weight, increase maneuverability speed, and combat effectiveness. In conclusion, it is suggested that the development of indigenous Iranian armor, relying on hybrid technologies and adapting to future battle patterns, be prioritized in land sector defense planning.
