The Islamic Republic of Iran is located in a region in which there are no stable and agreed security arrangements. In such a situation and in such a region, the emergence of extremist and terrorist groups such as ISIS, Al-Nusra, Boko Haram, which is the product of numerous regional, trans-regional, ethnic, religious and ideological factors, is not unexpected. The ISIS terrorist group, which bears the name of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), has been carrying out serious military operations in Iraq since June 2014, and has largely upset the country's political, security and military balance. The group claims to be trying to form an Islamic caliphate and enforce Islamic law, but their words and deeds are quite different. This article examines the impact of the formation of the ISIL terrorist group on the security of the Islamic Republic of Iran using the SWOT analysis method and tries to answer the fundamental question of what effect the formation of the ISIL terrorist group can have on the security of the Islamic Republic of Iran. This research has been prepared with a general description approach and the library-documentary resources and the World Wide Web have been used.
